UFC 302 takes place on Saturday in Newark, New Jersey, headlined by a massive lightweight championship bout. Champion Islam Makhachev continues his quest to prove he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport as he defends his title against fan-favorite Dustin Poirier. Poirier is looking to finally add a world championship to his legendary career after falling short in his previous two attempts to capture the lightweight title. Although Poirier had a run as interim champion, the asterisk of never capturing a world title remains a blemish on his record in debates about his place among the all-time great fighters. Makhachev has shown dominance reminiscent of his friend and trainer Khabib Nurmagomedov since suffering a shocking knockout loss in 2015. He is currently on a 13-fight winning streak and comes off back-to-back title defenses against fellow pound-for-pound elite Alexander Volkanovski.
The undercard features an intriguing middleweight showdown that could determine a title challenger later this year when Sean Strickland faces Paulo Costa. Strickland, the former titleholder, is coming off a tough split decision loss to Dricus du Plessis that cost him the title. Costa, meanwhile, has lost three of his last four fights, though all were against top contenders in the division. Additionally, the undercard includes the return of Kevin Holland at welterweight as he looks to get back on track. Veterans Alex Morono and Niko Price are also set to clash in the welterweight division.
