Two championship bouts take center stage as UFC 312 arrives in Australia on Saturday, February 8, 2025. Whenever the Octagon touches down in Australia—be it Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, or Sydney—something memorable seems to happen. From the introduction of the flyweight division to events where every bout ended in a finish, and from Holly Holm’s shocking upset of Ronda Rousey to Sean Strickland’s stunning victory over Israel Adesanya, Australian cards consistently deliver surprises and electrifying moments. This weekend’s event at Qudos Bank Arena promises to be no different.
The fight lineup features a middleweight championship rematch as the main event, with the strawweight title contested in the co-main event. The card showcases a mix of rising stars and local talent, some of whom fit into both categories. Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland will face off again, one year and twenty days after their first meeting at UFC 297 in Toronto, with the middleweight title on the line. Du Plessis, making his second consecutive appearance in Australia, aims to maintain his undefeated Octagon record and extend his overall winning streak to eleven. This marks his second title defense since capturing the belt. After claiming the championship in January, Du Plessis faced Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 in Perth last August, securing a submission victory to solidify his place atop the division.
Strickland previously won the middleweight title by defeating Adesanya in the same venue but lost it at the start of last year. He bounced back with a strong performance against Paulo Costa at UFC 302, a fight that controversially went to a split decision. Now, Strickland seeks to become just the second man, alongside Adesanya, to reclaim the middleweight belt twice by avenging his loss to Du Plessis.
Before the middleweight rematch, strawweight champion Zhang Weili defends her title against undefeated challenger Tatiana Suarez in the co-main event. Zhang had only one fight in 2024, but it was a memorable one as she overcame Yan Xiaonan in a thrilling battle at UFC 300. The two-time champion has won four consecutive bouts and successfully defended her title since reclaiming it at the end of 2023. She aims to continue her dominance by handing Suarez her first professional defeat. Suarez, long seen as a future champion, now gets her shot at UFC gold. The former Olympic wrestling prospect and Ultimate Fighter winner boasts six victories, including four finishes, since her time on the reality show. She hopes to become the sixth woman to claim the 115-pound title while preserving her perfect record.
In the final non-title bout of the evening, heavyweight knockout artists Justin Tafa and Tallison Teixeira square off. Tafa, 31, looks to rebound after a unanimous decision loss to Karl Williams, his only fight in 2024. With a 4-4 record and one no-contest in nine UFC appearances, Tafa has won all his fights by stoppage and aims for another knockout in Sydney, following his victory over Austen Lane at UFC 293. Teixeira, part of the 2024 Dana White’s Contender Series class, makes his UFC debut in Australia. The towering Brazilian enters with a 7-0 record, all finishes, and aims to continue his streak in his first Octagon appearance.
Australian light heavyweight Jimmy Crute returns to action against Brazil’s Rodolfo Bellato. Crute quickly ascended to the Top 15 in the division after earning his contract on the second season of Dana White’s Contender Series, winning four of his first five fights. However, after four winless bouts, including three stoppage losses, the 28-year-old briefly stepped away from the sport in mid-2023. Bellato earned his UFC contract on his second attempt in the Contender Series, after a loss to Vitor Petrino in his first try. He debuted in late 2023, overcoming adversity to defeat Ihor Potieria, and looks to build on that momentum in Sydney.
Opening the UFC 312 pay-per-view main card, Jake Matthews faces Argentina’s Francisco Prado in Matthews’ first welterweight bout. The 30-year-old Matthews, second only to Robert Whittaker as the longest-serving Australian in the UFC, will make his 21st Octagon appearance. He’s had mixed results in his last seven fights but hopes to build on his UFC 302 victory over Phil Rowe and secure his third consecutive win. Prado moves up to welterweight after a 1-2 run at lightweight, highlighted by a knockout win over Ottman Azaitar and a Fight of the Night performance against Daniel Zellhuber. At just 22 years old, it will be interesting to see how Prado adapts to the new division against a veteran like Matthews.
Elsewhere on the card, lightweights Quillan Salkilld and Anshul Jubli, both holding 7-1 records, face off. Salkilld, 25, secured his UFC spot with a decision win over Gauge Young on Dana White’s Contender Series, extending his win streak to seven. Jubli, after winning the Road to UFC lightweight tournament, suffered a stoppage loss to Mike Breeden at UFC 294. UFC 312: Du Plessis vs Strickland 2 is set for February 8, 2025, with the main card starting at 10 p.m. ET (February 9 at 3 a.m. UK, 7:30 a.m. IST). The main event is expected around 1 a.m. ET (6 a.m. UK, 10:30 a.m. IST). Timings may vary depending on the duration of earlier fights.
