Preview:

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Flyweight contenders Brandon Moreno and Steve Erceg will clash tonight (Saturday, March 29, 2025) inside CDMX Arena in Mexico City, Mexico, at UFC Mexico City.

Moreno’s main issue in recent years has been inconsistency. He is undeniably skilled but has sometimes relied on sloppy overhands in fights with top contenders, such as Brandon Royval. Despite that, he nearly defeated “Raw Dog” despite the poor game plan. That loss motivated the former champion to take some time off, and the reset proved successful with a brilliant performance over Amir Albazi in his last bout. For Erceg, the journey remains tough. The Australian talent was rushed into a title shot after just three UFC wins against Alexandre Pantoja and nearly upset the Brazilian, which showcased his talent. However, a knockout loss to Kai Kara-France hurt his position, though he wasn’t given a step back. Instead, at 29 years old, Erceg is now facing an even tougher challenge.

Moreno is a multiple-time Flyweight champion for a reason. He started his career as a submission fighter who enjoyed brawling but has developed into an elite competitor across all areas of the game. His boxing has become particularly strong, and he can still scramble on the floor with the best of them. The standout weapon in this matchup is Moreno’s jab, which is arguably the best in the division. When he finds his range and gets his lead hand going, the rest of his combinations and counters flow beautifully. His kicks land, his takedowns are well-timed, and it all just works. Therefore, the key early on is to pump out the jab in numbers and feint it actively. Ideally, Moreno should also look for takedowns, as he’s the superior scrambler with better cardio. If he can catch a kick or time his shot under a right hand, he’s more likely to take advantage with a submission or simply win the round.

Erceg is a well-rounded fighter, which is why he was able to keep up with Pantoja so well. Known for his Muay Thai and boxing, Erceg also has a high-level wrestling background (in Australia) and holds a black belt in jiu-jitsu. While winning won’t be easy, Erceg can compete with Moreno in all areas. Since the jab is so critical to Moreno’s game, taking it away will be a key strategy for Erceg. Without the jab, Moreno tends to rely on wild swings and a brawler mentality, which hasn’t completely disappeared despite his technical growth. Erceg is a great fighter, but on paper, Moreno has a slight edge in every aspect. Moreno is more accustomed to five-round bouts against elite fighters and is just a bit sharper overall. If Moreno is on his game, Erceg will need to rely on big moments like knockdowns or takedowns to sway the judges in his favor.
