The UFC Denver Fight Night event will take place at The Ball Arena in Denver, CO, on July 13, 2024. Also known as UFC Fight Night 243 or UFC on ESPN 59, the main event will feature a women’s flyweight bout between Rose Namajunas and Tracy Cortez. The prelims card is expected to start at 7 PM ET, followed by the main card at 10 PM ET. Viewers in the United States can watch the event on ESPN+ and ESPN, while UFC Fight Pass will stream the event in several parts of the world. TNT Sports will air the event in the UK.
Earlier this year, Rose Namajunas officially moved up to 125 pounds with a decisive win over veteran Amanda Ribas. Now, “Thug Rose” is in the title mix and could become a contender for the championship if Valentina Shevchenko remains selective about her trilogy matchup against Alexa Grasso. Tracy Cortez is stepping in for the injured Maycee Barber. Undefeated (5-0) in the UFC, Cortez aims to transition from a ranked prospect to a bona fide contender with a short-notice victory over the former champion.
Namajunas is a special talent, known for her exceptional boxing skills in women’s MMA. At 32, she is a veteran of the sport, seeking to build a third title reign. Namajunas has a clear advantage in this fight. While Cortez is a competent kickboxer, Namajunas moves more efficiently, builds better combinations, and is difficult to take down—Cortez’s usual fallback if kickboxing becomes challenging. Additionally, Namajunas has had a full training camp, whereas Cortez accepted the fight on short notice. If Namajunas keeps her feet moving and lets her hands fly, she should be able to control the pace and dictate the fight’s direction.
Tracy Cortez is a well-rounded and composed fighter known for her strategic approach. She adapts to her opponent’s weaknesses, employing either wrestling or distance striking as the situation demands. For this matchup, wrestling is the clear choice. Cortez is a sizable flyweight, and Namajunas has had difficulties with physicality in the past. In Namajunas’ last fight, she lost a couple of rounds due to the ground control and pressure applied by Ribas. Assuming Cortez is in good shape, focusing on wrestling is her best path to victory.
The key to this strategy is closing the distance before attempting to wrestle. Cortez is competent on her feet and can compete in striking. If she can earn Namajunas’ respect with her striking, cut off the cage, and then push hard for the takedown, Cortez gives herself a solid chance to grind down the former champion.
