This week, WWE is heading to San Diego as Friday Night SmackDown will take place at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California. The January 17 episode of the Blue brand will build on the momentum from Monday Night Raw, continuing to develop storylines and matchups leading to Saturday Night’s Main Event and the 2025 Royal Rumble PLE.
Top WWE superstars, including Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton, LA Knight, and Bianca Belair, are scheduled to appear. The show will feature two confirmed matchups and several anticipated segments.
Tiffany Stratton, the reigning WWE Women’s Champion, is set to defend her title against Bayley. Stratton won the title by cashing in her Money in the Bank contract on Nia Jax during the first SmackDown episode of 2025. Meanwhile, Bayley earned her title shot by winning a fatal 4-way match against Nia Jax, Bianca Belair, and Naomi. This will be Stratton’s first title defense, while Bayley looks to capture the championship for the third time in her career.
Another exciting matchup will see former WWE Tag Team Champions Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin (Motor City Machine Guns) face Angel and Berto (Los Garzas). Both teams earned their spot after victories last week—Los Garzas defeated Pretty Deadly, while the Motor City Machine Guns overcame A-Town Down Under. The winner of this match will become the number one contender for the WWE Tag Team Championship, currently held by Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano (DIY).
Solo Sikoa will also return after his loss to Roman Reigns in a Tribal Combat match on the debut episode of Monday Night Raw on Netflix. In that match, Roman reclaimed the sacred Ula Fala and declared his intention to pursue the Undisputed WWE Championship, announcing his entry into the 2025 Royal Rumble. Sikoa’s next steps remain uncertain, and fans will find out more during this week’s SmackDown.
With these matchups and segments, the January 17 2025 episode of SmackDown promises to be a night of action and surprises as WWE continues its road to the Royal Rumble.
